Let's dive a little deeper...

Sodium Citrate is also used as an emulsifier for oils in the cheesemaking process. Sodium citrate allows cheese to melt without becoming greasy. Historically, sodium phosphate was used to keep water and fat droplets mixed when cheese is melted. Like citric acid, it has a sour taste. From the medical point of view, it is used as alkalinizing agent. Most lemon-lime soft drinks owe their sour flavor to sodium citrate. It is also used to control acidity and acts as a stabilizer.

Some people may take 1.62 grams four times a day with meals or within thirty minutes after a meal or bedtime snack. Your doctor may change your dose if needed. However, most people usually will not take more than 10.8 grams a day. Children—Dose must be determined by your doctor.

Sodium citrate, a salt derived from citric acid, offers several health benefits, primarily related to its role as a food additive and a component in medical applications:

Acid-Base Balance: Sodium citrate can act as a buffering agent, helping to regulate the acid-base balance in the body. This can be beneficial in conditions where there is an excess of acid, such as in cases of metabolic acidosis.

Kidney Stone Prevention: Sodium citrate is sometimes prescribed to prevent the formation of kidney stones. It works by binding with calcium in the urine, reducing the risk of crystallization and the development of certain types of kidney stones.

Urinary Tract Infections: Sodium citrate can help in the management of urinary tract infections by increasing the pH of urine. This less acidic environment may inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, potentially reducing the risk of recurrent infections.

Antioxidant Properties: Citric acid, a component of sodium citrate, has antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals in the body, which can contribute to overall health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Food Preservation: Sodium citrate is commonly used as a food additive, acting as a preservative and stabilizer in various processed foods. By preventing the growth of bacteria and fungi, it contributes to food safety and shelf life extension.

Emulsification: In food applications, sodium citrate can function as an emulsifier, improving the texture and stability of certain products. This property is particularly useful in the production of cheese and other dairy products.

Alkalizing Agent: Sodium citrate can help neutralize excess stomach acid, making it useful in the treatment of conditions like acid reflux and heartburn.

While sodium citrate can offer these health benefits, it's important to use it in accordance with recommended guidelines and under the guidance of healthcare professionals. Excessive intake of sodium can be associated with health issues, so moderation is key. Always consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice regarding its use for specific health conditions.

FUN FACTS:

What is a fun fact about sodium citrate?

  • Like citric acid, it has a sour taste. Like other salts, it also has a salty taste. It is commonly known as sour salt and is mainly used as a food additive, usually for flavor or as a preservative. It gives club soda both its sour and salty flavors.

What is the origin of sodium citrate?

  • Sodium citrate, also called trisodium citrate is formed when citric acid reacts with sodium bicarbonate in the presence of water in a bath bomb. It is a compound widely used in industries, healthcare, food, and beverages.
